35 years ago -- Could be a rodent problem

FIVE YEARS AGO
Aug. 9, 2011
Hundreds attended the Stewartville Morning Lions "Taste of Italy" benefit for the Nate Dodd family. Michelle Dodd donated a kidney April 11 to her son Josh, who was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy at age five.
David Wendt and Kevin Chinn enjoyed their five-day visit to Camp Winnebago near Caledonia last week. Wendt was sponsored by the Stewartville Lions and the Stewartville VFW. Chinn was sponsored by the Stewartville Morning Lions.
The Ed and Sherri Twohey family has been named Olmsted County's 2001 Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota. Family members include, Ed, Sherri, Theresa, Jessica, Jacob, Eric and Tim.
The Stewartville swim team hosted Kasson in its final home meet of the summer on Aug. 1. Team scores were not recorded but individual place results revealed Stewie's dominance.

A recently formed committee working toward the construction of a new swimming facility would like to find out what the residents of Stewartville think about the issue. The 12-member group will gather input from the public at an informational meeting at the Stewartville High School Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m.
Street Beat - What do you enjoy most about the Olmsted County Fair? Emily Reinhardt: "Showing my sheep, my horse and my dog...." Amy Reinhardt: "Showing my animals and eating cheese curds...." Scott Hurley: "The competition, the camaraderie, the enjoyment, seeing old friends, and I met my wife here...." Lorna Maschoff: "The horse show. I like everything about it...."

Les and Jo Olson were awarded the J.P. Eves National Production Award at the National Brown Swiss Convention held in Burlington, Vermont July 4-8. The award is presented to the animal with the highest national milk production - IE Olson Thane Jane.
TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Stewartville and Racine area communities went into mourning this weekend upon hearing of the death of an 18-year-old Racine man in a three-vehicle crash Friday afternoon at the intersection of Mower Township Road 139 and Highway 63, just south of Racine. Chad Capelle, who graduated from Stewartville High School this spring, was pronounced dead at the scene. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Capelle, who farm just north of Racine.
Megan Himmer earned grand champion on her 4-H wood project at the Olmsted County Fair. Her entry was an oak roll-top desk.
Stewartville Community theater's production of "Brigadoon" was presented Saturday and Sunday at the Stewartville High School.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
When Andy Schatz of Stewartville finishes showing his grand champion beef steer at the Minnesota State Fair later this month, it will mark the end of an era. For 26 years, his family has been a mainstay in Olmsted County 4-H. With Andy as the last child of six, their 4-H work is complete, says his mother, Shirley.
The Stewartville Swim and Dive Team placed second in the annual region swim meet held at the Stewartville pool July 29.
Stewartville Senior Citizens President Stanley Williams presented two checks totaling $700 to Mayor Larry Gray. A portion of the funds ($500) will be used to purchase chairs for the Civic Center, while the balance will be donated to the Heartland Express city bus service.
Aaron Meyer, Ryan Ristau and Steve Olson were the big winners in their respective flights during the Maplebrook Junior Golf Tournament held Wednesday.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 6, 1986
Work may begin as early as this week on Stewartville's new 54-foot by 80-foot fire hall addition. Revised construction bids, accepted by the city council on Thursday, came in almost $12,000 below original estimates, and over $40,000 below initial bids opened June 14.
THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
Aug. 5, 1981
Olmsted County Health Department warns county residents it's a good idea to get the weeds and brush cleaned up right away. The department has received reports that the number of sightings of rats and skunks has significantly increased, probably due to the mild winters during the past two years plus the high water of natural rivers and streams.
The Minnesota State Automobile Association will conduct a free gas economy test in the parking lot of House Chevrolet in Stewartville.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 4, 1966
Records show that total attendance at the new pool, as of July 31, was 13,336.
Ed Bundy of Rochester announced Wednesday that he has leased the Corner Cafe in Stewartville from Reichel & Foss and plans to re-open the place for business by Aug. 10.
Neighbors and relatives held a haying bee at the Otto Bernard farm July 22-23, at which time more than 4,000 bales were harvested and stored.

Aug. 8, 1946
Due to the prevailing polio epidemic, A.C. Bergan, secretary of the Olmsted County Fair Association, announced today that children's day, scheduled at the Olmsted County Fair for Friday, has been cancelled.
Motorcycle racing, once an extremely popular sport that had its heyday in the early 20s, is back on the calendar of the Dodge County Fair.
SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
Aug. 7, 1941
M. E. Fauver, local manager of Interstate Power Company in Stewartville, is in Dubuque, Iowa this week attending a four-day meeting of local managers of the Interstate Power Company.
Ben Ellingrod, who resides three miles southeast of Stewartville in Sumner Township, narrowly escaped serious injury, when his clothing caught fire while attempting to start a tractor in the farmyard near his house Friday afternoon.
EIGHTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 6, 1936
Swinging their heavy artillery into action in the first inning, the Stewartville baseball team trounced the Claremont team fast Sunday, 22-5. Home runs by Bill McCall and "Dutch" Barrows featured the locals' slugfest.
Fire of unknown origin destroyed a hog house and straw shed on the Ed Kelly farm seven miles northwest of here Thursday morning. The fire threatened to spread to the big barn, but the quick response of the local fire department prevented the conflagration from spreading.
NINETY YEARS AGO
Aug. 12, 1926
Next Sunday will be the big day in Rock Dell, for on that day the East St. Olaf Norwegian Lutheran Church will celebrate its 70th anniversary. It is estimated that the church now has over 1,200 members in its congregation.
ONE HUNDRED FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
Aug. 9, 1901
G. T. Ryther of Pleasant Grove delivered a team of draft horses Wednesday to a Mr. Knight of Spring Valley. The team weighed 3,000 pounds and sold for $250.
J. I. Stillwell is in Chicago this week buying winter goods for his popular store in this village.
