40 years ago -- New business coming to Racine

Helen Smith and Catherine Towey, residents of the Stewartvilla Apartments planted petunias, tomatoes, basil, green pepper, dill, sage and parsley in one of the raised box gardens near the apartment complex. Towey said they are running out of space!
Theresa Twohey of Stewartville was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from National Dairy Shrine and Dairy Management Inc.
TEN YEARS AGO

Wendy Timm, who will conclude her second term as a member of the Stewartville City Council in December, has decided not to seek re-election.
A Stewartville man and his wife suffered injuries after the vehicle in which they were ridding was broadsided at a Rochester intersection July 29. Roland Frank and his wife Sandra, were transferred to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester after the crash. Roland was hospitalized and later released. Sandra was listed in fair condition.
Many Stewartville and area 4-H club members participated in this year's blue ribbon auction at the Olmsted County Fair. Bids and contributions from area businesses and organizations totaled $58,625, an all-time fair record.

Merle Matzke likes nothing better than to sit at her sewing machine, put on some old-time music and sew away. She won 37 ribbons for her sewing at this year's Olmsted County Fair.
The Stewartville American Legion baseball team District I champions include Jason Ferrie, Chris Prescott, Nate Reller, Jake Goodew, Jake Johnson, Isaac Johnson, Mike Poch, Matt Gordon, Brady DeBoer, Wade Robinson, Todd Garnatz and Brian English.
Danielle DeGeus, 7, won the Tractor Pedal Pull in her age group at the Olmsted County Fair Aug.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
Aug. 13, 1991
Zion Lutheran Church Lay Associate Eric McDonald said goodbye Sunday to the congregation. He will take a new position as a case worker in the Chicago Social Services system.
Lorenda Tiscornia, most recently a middle school instructor at a private Minneapolis school, has been hired by the Stewartville School board as the new assistant high school principal.
Sidewalk days downtown and a Classic Car Show along Third Ave. NW are the featured attractions for Stewartville's annual Farmer/Merchant Days, Friday and Saturday, Chamber of Commerce President Jerry Fix said.
Stewartville residents were big winners in craft and hobby divisions at the Olmsted County Fair senior citizen competition. Frances Raymond won the Exceptional Senior Sweepstakes Award and Best of Show Trophy for her sewing of a teddy bear. Helen Munson was a reserve winner for her crocheted sweater.
Mike and Karen Derrough are the new owners of the American Submarine Base located on north Main Street here.
Harlan Haugen, LPA, of Stewartville, was elected to the directorship of District 1 of the Minnesota Association of Public Accountants and installed at its 51st annual convention on June 28 in Duluth.
The Gilbert Fjelstad family of rural Stewartville were big winners in open class dairy competition during the Olmsted County Fair. The family took reserve championships in the Brown Swiss division.

Some local people, members of PATCO, have been affected by the national air traffic controller's strike.
The local teachers and school district will meet with a state mediator Aug. 27 concerning contract negotiations.
The new bridge on Olmsted County Road 1, over the Root River, near Fugels Mill, was opened to traffic last week.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 12, 1976
Ravenhorst Concrete Products, with home offices in Clarks Grove, is building a drain tile manufacturing plant on the north side of Racine.
Rains have improved corn and soy bean prospects in many areas of the important south central and southeastern districts.
The Stewartville swimming pool will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon for any swimmers who wish to participate in the American Cancer Society Swim-A-Long.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 11, 1966
Internationally known Tastee-Freez is completing a brand new drive-in restaurant at Highway 63 in Stewartville and is seeking a local owner of this location.
Curb-line mail delivery - something new in city delivery service in Stewartville - was placed in operation in the village last Monday.
Mrs. William Carr was installed president of the Ivan Stringer Post 164 American Legion Auxiliary Monday evening by Mrs. Harvey Holz, first district president of Austin.
SEVENTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 15, 1946
With three Stewartville children afflicted with polio, precautions are being taken here to prevent the spread of the disease. Children under 15 years of age are forbidden to attend the local movie theatre and other public gatherings while the epidemic exists. There will be no Sunday school at the Methodist church next Sunday and all Boy Scout meetings and activities have been cancelled.
A fine Hammond electric organ will be used for the first time at the services at the Methodist church next Sunday morning. The organ was purchased through memorial funds which are being contributed by members and friends in memory of loved ones who have passed on.
Twenty sheep are reported to have been killed by dogs on the Harry Carter farm southeast of Stewartville, last week.
Unregistered and uninsured gift parcels may now be sent to the British occupation zone in Germany, it is announced by the local post office.
EIGHTY YEARS AGO
Aug. 13, 1936
The Stewartville Fire Department announced that in the future all calls to rural fires will be $25 for country calls and $15 per each additional hour.
The Stewartville Boy Scouts are camping at Whitewater State Park near St. Charles this week. Those attending the camp are Emmet Kumm, Robert Ballard, Haven Gronert, Francis Sullivan, Harold Weiland, Harold Crowley, Rex Lenton, Lester Sackett, Jr., Gordon Sackett, Carl Peterson and Lawrence Kilmer
Miss Wavie Tubbs, first graduate of Stewartville High School, was elected president of the SHS Alumni Association at the annual picnic and meeting of the association held at our Lake Florence Park Thursday. Miss Lillian Giere was elected vice president and Elmer Olson, secretary and treasurer.
