85 years ago -- Hundreds attend first annual Dollar Day

FIVE YEARS AGO

Fareway of Stewartville and Pepsi recently teamed up to raise funds for the Stewartville Fire Department. Fareway launched its "Support Your Local Hero" fund raiser in conjunction with the National Pepsi Cola Refresh Project, an effort by Pepsi to raise funds that help communities move forward with betterment projects. Robert Hruska and Brett Struhar presented a $500 check to firefighters from the grocery store, and another $1,000 raised by Pepsi at the event.
The Stewartville High School Marching Band started its season with an impressive performance on the opening day of the Minnesota State Fair on Aug. 25. Stewartville is one of 42 marching bands that will compete in the State Fair's daily 2 p.m. parade over a period of nearly two weeks. The band will find their placement among those bands after Labor Day.
TEN YEARS AGO
Sept. 5, 2006
Don and Phyllis Podein will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Stewartville American Legion on Saturday, Sept. 9.
Beginning this fall, Stewartville High School's band plans to move from the football field to the Schaefer Field bleachers. Band director Jessica Van Tassel, has proposed that the group replace its football halftime marching field shows with pep band-style performances in the football bleachers.
Rollie Frank and his wife Sandy, who recently suffered injuries in a recent traffic crash, accepted a $500 check from Ernie Moeller, a director with the Stewartville Morning Lions. Half the money came from the Morning Lions, and half from the 5M1 Lions District emergency relief fund.
Racine Mayor Bryan Vrieze accepted a check in the amount of $4,958 from Racine Lions Club members Paul Thompson and Don Lyman to be used to purchase new street Christmas decorations.

Michael Schatz completed his Eagle Scout project by supervising the construction of a pavilion near the Bonner Elementary School playgrounds.

The third annual city-hosted community picnic was a rousing success last Thursday as an estimated 700 local and area residents gathered at Florence Park to enjoy hot dogs, brats, beans, chips, ice cream and friendly conversation.

Councilmember Ellen Nelson has filed for the four-year Stewartville mayoral post that will be decided in the November election, with newcomer Wendy Timm casting her bid for a four-year seat on the council.
Casper Eggler will be honored on the occasion of his 75th birthday with an open house at Zion Lutheran Church on Sunday, Sept. 8.
The Stewartville Tigers football team served notice on the rest of the HVL Thursday, pounding Byron 27-0 in the season opener at Byron.
The Stewartville Fire Department will put their ladders - and brushes - to work with their first-ever paint-a-thon at the Sears' House on North Main Street on Saturday.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
Sept. 3, 1991
Six new teachers begin duties at Stewartville schools this year, including Cathy Hinz, Chris Buller, Bev Nelson, Dan Simmons and Cheryl Anderson. New assistant principal is Lorenda Tiscornia.
Farmington's Tigers outlasted Stewartville's Thursday night, and won the season opener 21-12, there.
Work continued full force last week at the new Stewartville Public Library facility on 2nd St. Southeast.

American Family Insurance will officially open a new office in Stewartville Thursday. The office will be staffed by two agents, John Senjem and Gary Dunn.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Sept. 2, 1976
Doyle Johnson, golfing with his dad and brother-in-law, shot a hole-in-one on the third hole of Willow Greens Golf Course. Mel Harrington made his hole-in-one on the eighth hole last Thursday while golfing with Wes Foss, Glen Reichel and Bob Bergland on the same course.

Larry Gray, owner of Griffin's Furniture here, has been appointed to serve as trustee on the Village Council, filling the vacancy left by the recent resignation of Jim Boe, who is now residing outside of the village.

Sept. 6, 1951
Stewartville Public Schools has an increase of 24 students over last year when all other previous records were shattered. This year's total enrollment stands at 587, as compared with 563 last year.
Thirteen members of the Home Economics Club met for a potluck picnic at Lake Florence Park on Wednesday evening, Aug. 29. The occasion was in honor of the moving away of one of the members, Mrs. Russell Jensch.
Pamela Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thompson of Racine, was awarded the first prize of a $25 savings bond in the child's photo contest which was announced at the Lake Theatre on Monday morning.
EIGHTY YEARS AGO
Sept. 3, 1936
Calvin Giere announced that the school patrol will be on duty for the opening day of school on Sept. 14. There will be five patrols of four boys each. Boys making the patrols are John Lenton, John Myhre, William Tysseling, Gordon Sackett, Lawrence Kilmer, Vernon Leqve, Harold Weiland, Haven Gronert, Robert Ballard, Lester Sackett Jr., Robert Fieck, Emmett Kumm, Francis Sullivan, Harold Crowley, Rexford Lenton, Donald Skyhawk, William Struve and Willard and Jack Lenton.
The wail of the fire siren and a red lurid glow in the evening sky beckoned hundreds of people to a fire Thursday which destroyed a large barn on the Philip Sisson farm 2 ½ miles south of Stewartville on Hwy. 63. The Stewartville Fire Department saved other buildings from the fire.
The Kallgren hatchery moved this week from the Moore block into its new location in the Brown building.
EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
Sept. 3, 1931
Hundreds of people attended Stewartville's first annual Dollar Day last Saturday. In the evening the famous Bear Creek Band entertained the shoppers with a fine concert.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Engel are the happy parents of a baby girl born Aug. 28. The little girl has been named Pauline Lucille.
August Schroeder, a pioneer resident of this community, died Monday of a heart attack. He was 86 years of age.
ONE HUNDRED TWENTY YEARS AGO
Sept. 3, 1896
There were two more heavy frosts last week which damaged gardens and corn considerably.
Kitty Kelly and her mother made a pleasant drive to Rock Dell last Sunday.
Robert H. Kuehntopp left Saturday for Valparaiso, Ind. where he will take a 10-month course at the normal school.
