The EDA agreed last week to approve matching grants for Ambassador Liquor and Tiger Ace Hardware.
Graduates of the Stewartville High School class of 2013 will see 128 members walk across the stage May 31. Class speakers who will address their fellow graduates include Paul Trisko, Aaron Simmons, Laura Louks, Matthew Terhaar and Kyle Sivesind.
Earning scholarships from the Stewartville Kiwanis Club were seniors Taylor Severson, Ashley Campbell, Kristin Conley, Matthew Terhaar and Emily Ahart.
Street Beat question to SHS grads: What are your best high school memories, and what are your future plans? Leah Onsgard, "I enjoyed all the opportunities we're offered here in Stewartville. I also feel like everyone in our class is really accepting of others.... I plan to attend Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, for their biology program...." Andrew Goodman, "I liked meeting new people. I made a lot of friends. History was my favorite class.... I think maybe I'll go to college, but I want to take my time in making a decision...." Ryan Larson, "Sports. I like being part of a team, becoming a family with everyone else, setting a goal and reaching that goal.... I'm going to Winona State University to earn an education degree for high school. I'd like to be a high school history teacher...." Mariah Mrotek, "Definitely senior year, because you get a lot more freedom and you learn to be more independent. You get a study hall and open campus.... I plan to go to Winona State University and major in photojournalism. I'm not sure where photojournalism will take me, but it's definitely something I love...."
Receiving their State FFA Degree at the state convention April 28-30 were Dillon Welter, Kenny Dux and Tyler Schoenfelder. The degree is awarded to students who have been successful in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAR).
Mackenzie Olsen earned the HVL individual championship honor for the second year in a row during the girls golf Class AAA invite.
Members of the Bell of Honor Committee brought the bell and its trailer to the Griffin-Gray Funeral Home to pay tribute to Walter Mount, a Stewartville veteran, who died May 9 at the age of 100. Mount served in the U. S. Army Air Corps, including duty overseas in the Pacific Theatre, from 1942 to 1945.

Gary Kadansky of Stewartville lost 43 pounds in 12 weeks to be named "The Biggest Loser" in a contest sponsored by KTTC-TV and the Rochester Athletic Club. He earned a one-year membership at the RAC for his weight reduction, which he achieved by eating healthier foods, limiting his portions and working to improve his cardiovascular and muscular fitness.
Charges are pending against two male juveniles accused of stealing seven purses from a staging area during a choir concert at Stewartville High School on Sunday evening, May 18.
Senior citizens age 90 and older were honored at a Celebration of Life luncheon at the Stewartville Senior Center on May 7. Those honored include, Myrtle Tebay, Alphia Riehl, Mildred Peterson, Mabel Jans, Ruby Jans, June Clark, Harley Boettcher, Eleanor House and Agnes Griffin.
Battling at one of the toughest subsection meets in the state, the Stewartville boys golf team placed third and the Tiger girls finished fifth, failing to advance as teams but qualifying four individual boys and two girls for the Section 1AA championships at The Jewel in Lake City. The golfers qualifying are Austin Mulleneaux, Blake Honsey, Andre Joyce, Tim Bergeson, Blair Honsey and Brittaney Laber.
Rusty Hagan, a senior at Stewartville High School, has been named the winner of the Matt Smith Memorial Trophy, named in honor of Matt Smith, who played for the Rochester Raiders adaptive floor hockey team from 1991-1997. The trophy honors an adaptive athlete who loves to compete and unselfishly supports his teammates.
Shirley Hinze is excited about her new opportunity as the coordinator of Stewartville Senior Services.

A gun battle took place in northeast Stewartville, injuring a deputy and killing an assailant.
Gene and Lucine Reed will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Stewartville American Legion.
The Stewartville Lioness Club has donated $500 of the proceeds from its spring potato supper to the Stewartville Public Library. Pat Johnson, director of the library, accepted a check from Lioness members, Bev Noble, Jan Heitman, Elaine Eggler, Ona Benson, Ruth Pingree and Marilyn Lansing.
Street Beat question: What advice would you give to the graduating class of 2003? Elmer Wendt, "It's a rough time for advice right now. Jobs are kind of scarce and college tuition is going up. I would just say, do the best you can and keep on trying...." Monica Lichty, "Have fun while you're young. Time flies after you get out of school. Get as much education as possible so you can do anything you want and don't have to rely on other people...." Jessie Lund, "Have fun and do your best at what you're going to do in the future. It's important to go on and further your education...." Wayne Eisen, "As you're going out in life, always keep in touch with your family. I think young people have the message by now that they should continue their education."
Class speakers representing the Stewartville High School 2003 graduates include Sarah Rainey, Laura English, Heidi Severtson, Jared Thompson, Anthony Heddlesten, Alicia Robey and Beth Thicke.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has announced that Ginesa Dux, a 2003 Stewartville High School graduate, has been awarded a membership scholarship valued at $8,000 toward a Lutheran college; or $4,000 toward a non-Lutheran private or public college.

Harland King, the man whose middle name was "service to Stewartville" died Saturday at the age of 92 at the Stewartville Care Center, following a three-year illness with cancer.
Larry and Gerri Gray will observe their 50th wedding anniversary June 14 with an open house at the Stewartville Civic Center.
The Rev. Brent Molskness, pastor of the Stewartville Assembly of God Church, will lead the Stewartville High School Class of 1998 baccalaureate services.
Four teens will vie for the title of High Forest Old Settlers Queen. The candidates include Cassandra Henry, Michelle King, Becky Stiles and Laura Westrum. The queen will be crowned June 20 during the annual High Forest Old Settlers Days dance.
Rose Bowe and her husband, Paul, of Stewartville, have provided adult foster care for the past 11 years and were one of the first in Olmsted County to provide such care.
The Stewartville Lions Club spent the last month or so gathering donations for the victims of tornados in the south central part of Minnesota earlier this spring. The Lions raised $509 for the effort. The funds will be sent to the Tornado Relief Fund.
Naomi Tillison and Lindsay Garry were recently named to the All-State Academic Softball Team by the state coach's association for their academic achievements.
Junior Erin Hebl was the lone Stewartville Tiger to be named to the All-Conference Fastpitch Softball Team.
The Stewartville Chamber Ambassadors paid a welcome visit to Stewies last week, the restaurant formerly known as Henry Walters. The new owners are Chad Malman and Harla Morehart. Chamber members welcoming Chad and Harla were Pam Waugh, Jan Lubahn, Harlan Haugen, Chris Gray, Kari Koenigs and Gene Peters.

One hundred eighteen Stewartville High School seniors will receive their diplomas during graduation exercises on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Schaefer Field.
High Forest queen candidates are Melanie Wienk, Heather Lawrence and Amy Howe. The queen will be crowned during High Forest Old Settlers Days June 19-20.
Stewartville amassed 265 points, four times the total of second place Blooming Prairie, to run away with the boys Sub-section 2A track and field title, Thursday. The Tigers' score was enough to beat the other six schools combined.
Boyum Foods owners announced last week that they had purchased their "next door neighbor" building from its owner, Jerry Allen.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
May 31, 1988
City council members, May 24, approved additional repairs to the city's water tower totaling about $18,000. The work will include sandblasting and re-coating the interior two-thirds of the tank; work that will require the water tower to be shut down for up to two more weeks, contractors say.
Gary Johnson, owner of Ambassador Liquor here, was the only individual to submit a bid for the Spring Valley store May 23 after the Spring Valley City Council decided to sell the municipal off-sale operation earlier this year.
Kris Nelson, SHS junior, and Ryan Wiltgen, sophomore, shot their way onto the 1988 Hiawatha Valley League All-Conference Golf team.
Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors welcomed Bill Caturia, new owner of the Stewartville Dairy Queen, to the business community last week. Caturia is formerly from Hastings.

June 1, 1983
Dr. Risser, a family practice physician, will move to new facilities in the space formally occupied by Four Seasons Department Store. In adjoining the shared space will be Dr. Craig Thauwald of the Olmsted Medical Group. Dr. Risser, who opened a practice of family medicine in Stewartville in 1936, will continue with a family practice.
Dr. Alman O. Hagen, 82, a dentist in Stewartville for 50 years, a former city council member and charter member of the Stewartville Lions Club, died May 26 of complications following open heart surgery.
Berg-Boyum Properties, a general partnership which owns Center Town Plaza, has entered into a long-term lease agreement for the 4,000 sq. ft. space being prepared for the Olmsted Medical Group.
FORTY YEARS AGO
June 1, 1978
Demolition of the 1900 portion of Central School will begin Monday, but the bell and the cupola will be saved. According to the bid contract of Doyle Connor Co., the firm will save the two units to be preserved in memory of the 1900 building. It is hoped the cupola and the bell can be placed in the courtyard area of the present high school.
A plan for an addition adjoining the nursing home, to house the elderly and handicapped, was presented by the Nursing Home Board to the City Council Thursday. The addition would house those not in need of nursing care, but would be close by in case health care was needed.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
May 30, 1968
A family of five lost most of their possessions when their rented home was severely damaged by fire following an explosion Saturday and then was completely destroyed early Sunday when it rekindled. The William Ahern family had removed only a stereo set and a few items of clothing after Stewartville firemen extinguished the blaze that started about 2 p.m. Saturday and had taken up residence with friends at Kings Park. The first fire started after fumes from chemical solvents reached the pilot light of a water heater and then exploded. The fire rekindled about 2:45 a.m. and was beyond repair by the time the firemen arrived.

Starting next Monday, Christy and his all new company of players opens a three-night engagement under their flame proof tent theatre with a comedy drama featuring Christy Junior as "Ole."
Mrs. H. W. Stockfleth, head of the Legion Poppy Day Sales here, reports that the sales this year amounted to $158. Girl Scouts assisted the Legion ladies in selling the little red flowers.
Eight new members were initiated into the local chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star Tuesday. The candidates were Mr. and Mrs. Ennesley Megraw, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Kinsley, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Green and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Horton,
EIGHTY YEARS AGO
June 2, 1938
Summer playground recreation, under the direction of Ralph Rice, will begin June 6. New equipment included this year will be good sand for sandboxes, shovels, pails, cars, trucks, etc., jig saws for making puzzles, door stops, wood carving tools, outdoor baskets and horseshoe courts.
Confirmation services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church Sunday. Members of the class are Doris Betcher, Rueben Born, Ruth Henke, Esther Griebenow, Norma Janssen and Renata Wallner.
NINETY-FIVE YEARS AGO
June 8, 1923
The ladies of the Monday Study Club together with their husbands were entertained at a picnic supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Apperle on Monday evening.
John Rausch lost a valuable full blood bull from the heat last Saturday.
