Twenty-two Stewartville students have learned important lessons about the joy of serving others.
The students, part of Stewartville Community Education's Youth Embracing Stewartville (YES) program, recently cleaned lockers at Stewartville High School and Middle School, visited the residents of the Stewartville Care Center and spent a morning with Tiger Time children at the Central Education Center.
Jim Parry, coordinator of the YES program, said service learning is one great way for young people to form strong bonds with others.
"Youth who are connected with their communities grow up to be successful adults who continue to be connected to those communities," Parry said.
By visiting the Care Center and working with the children at Tiger Time, the students learned about the importance of interacting with others, Parry said.
"We spent one morning at the Care Center with some very special people there," he said. "Human connection is what the residents were looking for. We were honored to provide it for them! (At Tiger Time) we hoped to make (the children's) day special through one-to-one connection."
Parry said he has heard nothing but positive comments from not only the youth, but from the families and organizations with whom they interacted...
