Making its decision as a large audience looked on at the Central Education Center last week, the School Board voted 4-3 to require all students in grades K-12 to wear masks in Stewartville schools to start the 2021-22 school year.
Rebecca Wortman, School Board chair, and members Todd Emanuel, Ryan Ravenhorst and Lori Miller-Beach all voted for the mask mandate. Members Scott Romens, Nichol O'Neill and Will Welch voted against, indicating parents should be free to determine whether their children should wear a mask.
The Board's decision means all school staff and visitors will also be required to wear face coverings in the district's schools regardless of their vaccination status.
Wortman indicated when it comes to the COVID-19 virus, she respects parents' rights to make choices for their children. At the same time, choices have consequences, she indicated...
