Hannah Bauer, a substitute teacher at Bonner Elementary School since the beginning of the 2021-22 school year, helps Jayden Holubar, a first grader, with a math project. Although the Stewartville School District is short on substitutes, Bauer enjoys the work. I always go home at the end of each school day and share the countless positive stories with my fiance, and know that what I did with the kids that day at school made a difference, even if it was a small one, she said. Its the little things that go a long way.

After gaining two years of experience teaching in elementary classrooms, Hannah Bauer didn't think she would ever become a substitute teacher.
After graduating from Winona State University with an elementary education degree in 2019, she taught fifth graders at Lyle Elementary School her first year out of college and fourth graders at Halverson Elementary School in Albert Lea the next year.
Shortly thereafter, she and her fiancé, Parker Lyga, moved to Stewartville, where Lyga was hired as the boys varsity basketball coach. In a brand new place and without a regular teaching job, Bauer saw substitute teaching as an attractive option...
