Hungry for state! That's state, not steak, and the pangs are the greatest in the two bellies of Stewartville cross county team seniors Isiah Scruggs and Abby Orvis. Scruggs, who qualified for the big dance his sophomore season and Orvis, who narrowly missed joining teammates Kailee Malone and Laura Pedelty at last year's state meet, are craving to run on the sport's biggest stage. Recovering from injury most of last season, Scruggs is determined to qualify for state as a senior and will lead a talented blend of veteran and young runners - all letterwinners - including senior Shawn Husgen, junior Logen Faulhaber, sophomore Brandon Holschlag, freshmen Christopher Remling and Scott Boelman, as well as senior newcomer Sam Barnes. Orvis ran No. 1 all last season and will be joined in her quest by veteran and young letterwinners, including juniors Autumn Feine, Emily Schlechtinger, Laura Pedelty and Taylor Smith; sophomores Kailee Malone, Isabel Field, Grace Waltman and varsity newcomer Gloria Nelson; and eighth grader Olivia Field. Orvis, Malone, Pedelty, Isabel Field, Feine, Waltman and Olivia Field lost a tiebreaker at the sections, denying them a trip to state as a team. "All seven varsity girls return this season and after losing a tie-breaker for second place at sections, they are training with fire in their bellies to get another chance," said Tiger coach Mickie Tuseth. "Our goal is a state berth as a team! It would be the first in school history!" Perennial power Lake City is again Stewie's rival to win HVL and Section 1A titles while Lanesboro-Fillmore Central, Byron and Cotter should field strong teams as well.
