Hundreds of kindergarten through eighth-grade youth wrestlers converged on the Mayo Civic Arena April 5-8 hoping to place and collect a medal at the 2018 Northland Youth Wrestling Association (NYWA) State Championships and 2018 NYWA Invite Tournament. The local Tiger youth had 15 wrestlers qualify for the two separate events, with four matmen, including Krosby Miller, Wyatt King, Jackson Hewitt and Christian Sackett making the awards podium in their respective age and weight classes at the state championships. Five other Stewie matmen placed in the invite tourney. Miller, a 60-pound kindergartner, placed second, pinning his opponent at 2:36 in the quarterfinals, winning 3-2 in the semi's before losing 6-2 in the title bout. King claimed third place in the 85-pound weight class of grades 1-2. He won his quarterfinal match 8-1, lost 5-3 in the semi's, won by an 11-0 major decision in the semi's of the third-place bracket and won by fall at 2:23 to earn the third-place medal. Jackson Hewitt captured the silver medal in the 110-pound weight class of grades 3-4. He won his quarterfinal match by pinning his opponent in 51 seconds, won by fall in 45 seconds in semi's before losing 2-0 in the championship title match. Christian Sackett claimed the fifth-place medal in the 160-pound weight class of grades 7-8. He won by fall in the first 25 seconds of his preliminary-round match. He lost 5-3 in his quarterfinal bout, won 6-2 in his first match in the consolation bracket, won 7-1 in the consolation quarterfinal round, lost 4-1 in the consolation semi's and won 1-0 to claim fifth place. Tiger youth wrestlers who did not qualify for the NYWA State Championships competed at the NYWA Invite tournament.
