Coming off a 9-18 year, the preseason polls didn't give the 2017-18 Stewartville girls basketball team a chance. But the Tigers exceeded all expectations, compiled a 24-6 record, earned an HVL Gold Division and West 1AA Subsection championship along with a Class AA, Section 1 runner-up trophy, just missing a trip to state by five points.
Stewie outscored its opponents by an average of 17 points per game at 67.6-50.6. The Tigers hit 39 percent of their field goals, including 42 percent from two-point range, 31 percent from beyond the arc, as well as 61 percent from the free throw line.
Rebounding was another successful area for Stewie as it outrebounded its opponents by an an average of 10 percent per game. The Tigers rebounded 43 percent of their shots on the offensive boards and 67 percent of their opponents' shots on the defensive boards.
"As a coach I have never witnessed such a quick turnaround from a group of athletes," Tiger coach Ryan Liffrig complimented. "Every player on this team had a role and they bought into that role for the good of the team and that's what it takes to succeed."
"I would like to thank the fans, community and parents for the support that helped make the season special," Liffrig concluded.
