Four first-place finishes and points scored in 17 of the 18 events earned the Stewartville boys track and field team the 2018 Hiawatha Valley League (HVL) Championship at the 11-team tournament hosted by Byron on May 12. The Tigers piled up 173.5 points, distancing themselves from second-place Byron, which finished with 146.5 team points. Girls 2nd at HVL tourney Three of Stewie's four relays placed first and the Tigers scored in 12 of the 18 events while 10 athletes earned All-HVL honors and the Stewie girls scored 109 points, claiming second to host Byron with 168.5 points. "Our four relay teams did exceptionally well," Tiger coach Dawn Miller praised. "Three (4x100m, 4x400m and 4x800m) placed first and the 4x200m raced to second. Maggie Beach heaved a personal best (PB) in the shot by over two feet, claiming second place with a landing of 34-3.5." Athletes earning 10 points or more on a scoring system of 12 points for first place through one point for ninth place, received All-Conference honors.
