Memorial service for Helen Gusa May 19 in Rochester

The memorial service for Helen E. Gusa, of Stewartville, will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2017, in the Timothy Chapel at Autumn Ridge Church in Rochester, with the Rev. Karen Foster and the Rev. Woody Roland officiating. Burial will take place at Elgin Cemetery in Elgin.
Mrs. Gusa died of natural causes on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had been a resident since 2014.
Helen Ester Amos was born on June 5, 1924, in Little Valley, Elgin Township, Olmsted County to Alvin and Lillian (Zimmerman) Amos. She grew up on the family farm and attended Pine Ridge Country School No. 40.
Helen was married on Feb. 2, 1941 in Elgin to Richard E. Gusa. The couple lived and farmed in rural Elgin before moving to the Stewartville area where they raised their daughters and have continued to make their home for many of their 68 years of married life. Helen was a homemaker and was employed at Waters Connolly Co. in Rochester for a number of years. Richard farmed and was employed as an electrician at Gusa Electrical in Elgin in earlier years and at Kuntz and Teigen Electrical in Stewartville until his retirement. Mr. Gusa died in January 2007.
Helen was a member of Autumn Ridge Church, the Eagles in Rochester and the Elgin American Legion Post 573 Ladies Auxillary. Helen and Richard enjoyed taking their girls on vacation in the summer to the Black Hills or Colorado or to northern Minnesota, fishing. They continued to travel following their retirement and enjoyed driving to the Mississippi River. Helen enjoyed gardening, reading her Bible, visiting with friends and loved spending time with her children and their families.
Helen is survived by three daughters, Barbara Engel of Stewartville, Patricia Lipke (Norman)-Laabs of rural Racine and Cheryl (Mike) Holzer of Wykoff; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Bonnie Gathje of Pine Island and her brother, Donald (Janice) Amos of Stewartville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents; son-in-law, Jerry Engel; brother, Gerald "Ike" Amos; four sisters, Merle Taylor, Charlotte Johnson, Mildred Liskow, and infant sister, Vera and brother-in-law, Arnie Gathje.
A time of visitation will take place for family and friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday morning.
Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
