Funeral for Lester Schroeder Aug. 11 at St. John's

The funeral service for Lester W. Schroeder, 92, a longtime Stewartville area farmer, was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, 2017 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville with Rev. Steve Andrews officiating. Burial followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.
Mr. Schroeder died on Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, of natural causes at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center in Grand Meadow, where he had been a resident for the past four years.
Lester Walter Schroeder was born March 6, 1925 in rural Meriden to Carl and Laura (Mundt) Schroeder. He grew up in rural Waseca, before moving with his family as a young boy to rural Stewartville. He attended country school and then farmed with his family.
Lester was married on Sept. 7, 1952 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville to Janette Mae Vrieze. Following their marriage the couple built a new house across the road from the Schroeder family farmstead, where they raised their family and lived for all 57 years of their marriage. Mrs. Schroeder died on Sept. 22, 2009.
Lester was a lifelong farmer and also worked part time as a carpenter, including the construction of his own home. Janette was a farm wife and homemaker and also was a longtime employee at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester as a unit secretary. Lester was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville. He enjoyed coon and deer hunting, fishing, camping, listening to old time polka/waltz music and square dancing with Janette. He loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The Schroeder family would like to thank all the employees at Grand Meadow Heath Care Center for their excellent and loving care.
Lester is survived by two daughters and one son, Christine (Jim) Leis of Sparta, Wis., Barbara (Dean) Polkowske of Bradenton, Fla. and Bruce (Vicki) Schroeder of rural Racine; Jill Sheely of Stewartville, his granddaughter, whom Janette and Lester raised from the age of six months and their eight other grandchildren, Joseph (Jody) Schroeder and Sarah (Bryan) Konisiewicz; Chad Elton (Jenn Steffen) and Diana Elton; Derek Thielen (Samantha Thompson) and Scott Thielen; Ryan Schroeder and Kyle Schroeder; 16 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janette; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Linda Schroeder; son-in-law, Craig Elton; two sisters, Mildred Brandt and Arlene Andreasen, and a brother, Lorence Schroeder.
A time of visitation for friends and family will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2017 at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday morning.
Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
