Funeral for Wilbur Schumann Jan. 25 in Rochester

The funeral service for Wilbur F. Schumann, 91, a longtime Rochester, resident will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester, with Rev. Joel Haak officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester with military graveside honors by Rochester American Legion Post 92.
Mr. Schumann died on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018 of natural causes at Season's Hospice in Rochester, where he had been a resident for three days.
Wilbur Frederick Schumann was born on June 10, 1926 in High Forest Township, Olmsted County, Minnesota, to Gerhardt and Dena (Balsen) Schumann. He grew up on the family farm, attended rural school and Stewartville High School, graduating in 1944. In 1945 he enlisted into the U.S. Merchant Marine serving during WWII, including duty overseas in the Pacific Theatre until 1946. He then began serving in the U.S. Army until 1947, with duty over seas in Japan, returning to Minnesota following his discharge.
Wilbur was married on May 15, 1948 in Asplund, to Marilynn B. Iverson. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Rochester, where they raised their children and have continued to live all 69 years of their marriage. Wilbur was employed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester for 18 years in the x-ray deparatment, and then as a electrocardiography lab supervisor for 22 years until his retirement in 1988. Marilynn was employed for over 30 years as office manager for Ruffalo Drug Store in Rochester. The Schumanns had lived in their home in Rochester for 67 years until recently moving to the Waters in Rochester. Wilbur was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He and Marilynn were longtime members of the Holiday Rambler Travel Trailer Club chapter in Rochester and attended over 30 national rallys and met other members in the area for the monthly camps for many years. Wilbur served as a past Minnesota state manager for the club. RV camping in the winter in Arizona and with their children and their families is a Schumann Family tradition. He enjoyed following the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. He enjoyed visiting with friends and loved time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wilbur is survived by his wife, Marilynn; two daughters and one son, Larry (Bonnie)Schumann of Pine City, Judith (Patrick) Riley of Fargo, North Dakota and Kari (Tom) Barker of Peoria, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Kristine (Chris) Buresh, Rebecca Schumann (Chris Bandel), Ryan (Judith) Riley, Lindsay (Greg) Oakland, Grant Barker and Elizabeth Barker; three great-grandchildren, Alexis, Jocelyn and Andrew Buresh and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Marion Rowenkamp and two brothers, Henry and Gerhardt Schumann.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday morning.
The Schumann family suggests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church Legacy Fund or the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
