Memorial service for Edna Bernard Feb. 16 at UMC

The memorial service for Edna M. Bernard, 95, of Stewartville will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, at the Stewartville United Methodist Church with Rev. Wane Souhrada officiating.
Mrs. Bernard died on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had resided for the past four years.
Edna Mae Martin was born on Sept. 21, 1922 in Hitchcock, South Dakota to Eugene and Bertha (Swarm) Martin. She was the youngest of two daughters. Due to their father's employment, the family moved often and Edna attended 23 different schools before graduating from Rochester High School in 1941.
She met Loren Bernard in 4-H in Pleasant Grove Township and they married on Nov. 24, 1941. Following their marriage the couple lived in rural Stewartville. They had two children, Delphine and Eugene, and they also moved often in the early years of their marriage. Edna was a homemaker and was also employed part-time and full-time at Sears, Neisners and Buttrey Department Stores, all in Rochester. They moved to rural Chatfield, where they farmed and continued to make their home for a number of years, before moving to Stewartville in 1991. Mr. Bernard died on Nov. 30, 1996. Edna was a past member of Chatfield United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, and a current member of Stewartville United Methodist Church, where she was active in its ladies groups. She was a past member of Happy Homemaker and the Good Neighbors Clubs and was an active volunteer both at the Stewartville Care Center and Stewartville Senior Center. She always was available to give her friends a car ride when needed. She and Loren enjoyed travelling and Edna's two favorite destinations were Sequoia National Forest in California and Roberts Lake in Faribault. She loved camping, garage sales, going to her grandchildren's school and sporting events and time spent with her family, especially her great-grandchildren.
Edna was a true "saint" - a friend to many and loved by many more. She will be missed!
Edna is survived by her son, Eugene (Sharon) of Chatfield; son-in-law, Dick Gunderson of Palm Bay, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Kami (Jeff) Leonard, Curt (Diane) Gunderson, Darin (Laurie) Bernard, Bruce (Michelle) Bernard, Ken (Gwen) Stevens, Kevin (Mary Kay) Stevens and Scott (Cathy) Stevens; 13 great-grandchildren and three great-greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loren, and daughter, Delphine Gunderson, her parents, and sister, Ethylle Pugsley.
A time of visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Friday morning at the church. Burial will take place at the Chatfield Cemetery in the spring.
Edna's family suggests memorials to the Stewartville United Methodist Church or to activities at the Stewartville Care Center.
Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville. www.griffin-gray.com
