Since its launch, billionaire Jeff Bezos’ megayacht has been the subject of much controversy. The latest concerns the Amazon founder’s visit to Monaco. Quite simply, the huge boat was not allowed to dock there.
When you have a fortune valued at over 220 billion dollars, buying a 500 million dollar megayacht doesn’t amount to much. The problem is that this kind of behemoth of the seas pollutes enormously, both ecologically and visually. And even in a place where luxury is everywhere, such as Monaco, Jeff Bezos was unable to moor his megayacht named Koru in the principality’s port.
For Jeff Bezos, size matters, and that’s sometimes a problem
The billionaire travelled to Monaco with his future wife Lauren Sanchez to attend the Formula 1 Grand Prix, which takes place there every May. And lately, the couple have taken to travelling by sea, rather than by air. Koru approached the port of Monaco in the middle of last week. However, the port authorities soon asked him to stay where he was.
And the reason? Simple: Jeff Bezos’ huge boat is too big to be moored in the port of Monaco. It is 127 metres long, 17.2 metres wide and has 70-metre-high masts. By way of comparison, the maximum length of a football pitch is 120 metres. No wonder the Principality wanted to keep it away from the marina, but that hasn’t stopped it from attracting attention.
A recurring problem for the billionaire
As a result, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez had to travel to Monaco in a simple speedboat, leaving their outward sign of (great) wealth floating a few hundred metres from the port. But that didn’t stop them from attending the Monaco Grand Prix in VIP conditions.
The situation should have come as no surprise to the billionaire. He plans to marry his fiancée in a city of Venice transformed for the occasion, and has already been informed by the local authorities that his ship will not be able to approach the City of the Doges because of its indecent size. But this in no way prevents the couple from travelling the world with him.
In recent weeks, he has been spotted off the coast of Spain, Saint-Tropez and Cannes, where Lauren Sanchez received an award. Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos’ partner, received an award for her environmental commitment at the Global Gift Gala. A rather ironic situation when you consider that the journalist travels with her partner in a megayacht which, despite having three large sails, regularly has to rely on a diesel engine to move forward.
