June Retterath was driving with her friend Marybeth Hemann in the passenger seat as the two returned home from work at the Mayo Clinic on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 15. It had been raining on and off that day, and as the car proceeded westward along Interstate 90, it hit a wet patch and began hydroplaning, then slid down into the ditch, only to come back up on the eastbound side of the highway. "A semi hit us," Hemann said. "It broadsided June's side first. The impact knocked her out. She went one way and I went the opposite. My seat belt held me in, but I broke my back."
