Lara Mandoki of Erfurt, Germany, has good memories of her time as a foreign exchange student at Stewartville High School. She has learned a number of lessons from being an exchange student. “You become more independent,” she said. “You can’t rely on your parents.”
In her quiet moments, as a high school student in Erfurt, Germany, Lara Mandoki sometimes thought about what it would be like to live in a place far away. At her school, a few of the older students talked about their own experiences as foreign exchange students. As she listened, Mandoki moved closer in her own mind to becoming an exchange student herself. "I wanted to improve my English," she said. "It just seemed interesting going somewhere else for awhile and experiencing something different." Erfurt is a city of about 200,000, a 1 1/2-hour drive from Frankfurt. School is a challenge there.
