Roger Barsness, quartermaster (treasurer) of the Stewartville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8980, stands at the site where the VFW and Stewartville American Legion Post 164 will build a new memorial honoring local and area veterans.
Sitting quietly vacant, a parcel of land between Hwy. 63 and Second Avenue Southwest will one day be the home of a new Stewartville Veterans Memorial. Roger Barsness, the quartermaster (treasurer) of the Stewartville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8980, stopped by last week to look over the site, located near Stewartville's south entrance. The VFW, with help from the Stewartville American Legion Post 164, is seeking funding for the memorial, which will be built to honor Stewartville and area veterans for their service to America. The VFW and Legion are seeking grants and donations from a number of sources, including businesses and individuals, to help pay for the project, Barsness said.
