Julie Jaeger, who has been driving a school bus since March of 1976, will retire from her bus driving duties on Tuesday, March 30. She said she enjoyed driving because she liked being around young students, and the bus schedule allowed her to be there for her own children as they were growing up.
Julie Jaeger of Stewartville started driving a school bus in March of 1976. Since that time, she has transported thousands upon thousands of children from their homes to school and back again. It all started when she sought a license to drive a church bus for Tuesday School at Zion Lutheran Church. "Buddy Glover asked if I wanted to get a bus endorsement," Jaeger said. "I said I would think about it, and so I did." She started driving for Engel Bus Services as a part-time substitute for Harlan Haugen, a certified tax accountant, who needed time off from driving to prepare his customers' taxes during tax season. "I did the 3 p.m. route until April 15," Jaeger said with a smile. "Then I said to Harlan, 'You've got your route back.' "... For more on this story pick up your copy of the Feb. 16 Stewartville STAR.
