With an octagon picnic shelter and a nearby restroom virtually finished, members of the Stewartville Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8980 are looking forward to completing the new Veterans Memorial Park near the city's south entrance. Roger Peterson, VFW commander for six years, said the VFW, with help from Stewartville American Legion Post 164, is still raising funds to pay for the granite monument to be placed near the entrance to the park. VFW leaders initially estimated the project would cost a total of $325,000. "We probably need another $25,000 to finish the project, mainly the monument," Peterson said. "The cost for granite has gone up. Getting the granite for the monument will determine when we can get it done." The monument will be six feet tall and eight inches wide with a black base and a sloping top. It will display emblems from all six branches of the military, three on one side and three on the other, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Space Force...
