Thirty-one students in sixth through eighth grades took part in this year's Stewartville Middle School Spelling Bee, held at the Middle School on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Top place winners included, from left, Charlie Boerger, eighth grader, first place; Aiden Meinecke, sixth grader, second; Corbin Hegrenes, sixth grader, third; and Grant Jeardeau, seventh grader, fourth. It took 10 rounds to determine the winners, with contestants correctly spelling difficult words such as reflexology, permanence, appeasement and aerials. Aimee Johnson, talent development specialist at Bonner Elementary School and Bear Cave Intermediate School, said spelling bees teach students the importance of patience, thinking well on their feet and dealing with not always having luck on their side. Kathy Henderson, a sixth-grade English teacher, and Liz Waugh, sixth- and seventh-grade English teacher, were the judges for this year's Bee. Also, Johnson thanked Margaret Nelson of State Farm Insurance for donating paper pads and pencils for the event.
