Produce stolen from community garden
Earlier this summer, Nicole Magnuson grew suspicious when her plot at the city of Stewartville's community garden wasn't producing as expected.
"We have been unable to get any produce out of our garden except our beans," she said. "Mainly, we noticed that our tomatoes are coming up missing frequently."
One day, Magnuson twice caught a group of individuals taking produce from other people's gardens. When she told them the vegetables weren't there for the public to help themselves, the group responded that the gardens were for the community and they could take what they wanted, Magnuson said.
Magnuson again told the people that the gardens were private, and that the food grown there is not for public consumption.
"They left and then were caught again less than two hours later in the garden with bags full of produce," she said.
Magnuson has mixed emotions about the people who stole the vegetables.
"On one hand, I feel very sorry for them that whatever is going on in their lives has led them to have no other option than to steal," she said. "But on the other hand, it is aggravating, because we work so hard in the gardens, busting our butts on hot and humid days to grow produce for our family, and yet they somehow think they are entitled to it..."
