Hughes named to All-WIAC University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL) senior right-handed pitcher Caitlyn Hughes, a 2015 SHS grad, was named to the 2019 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Softball First Team in a vote by the league coaches on May 7. Hughes garnered her third career All-WIAC First Team honor this year after earning the award in 2016 and 2017. She was selected the 2016 WIAC Pitcher of the Year. Hughes is 13-4 on the season with a 3.00 earned run average, one save and three shutouts. She leads the Eagles in wins (13), appearances (26), starts (21), complete-games (7), innings (105.0), strikeouts (84) and opponents' batting average (.257). Hughes is second in the WIAC in starts (21) while being tied for second in wins (13). She ranks third in strikeouts (84), fourth in appearances (26), fifth in innings (105.0) and seventh in opponents' batting average (.257). She has pitched at least 5.0 innings in 10 of her 21 starts in 2019. Hughes earned shutout wins over Ripon College (Wis.) on March 2, Centre College (Ky.) on March 20 and UW-Stevens Point on April 23. She picked up a save in the Eagles' victory over UW-Platteville on April 28. Hughes ranks third in school history in wins (40) and appearances (92) while being fourth in innings (384.2) and strikeouts (285). She is 40-23 in her four-year career with 75 starts. Hughes' 13 victories in 2019 are tied for seventh in single-season school history. Hughes helped lead UWL to its third (2009, 2010, 2019) WIAC championship with a 2-1 walk-off win over UW-Eau Claire on May 5. With the win, UWL earned the league's automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) D-3 Championships.
