UW-La Crosse pitcher Caitlyn Hughes was recently honored for her accomplishments.
NFCA Release- University of Wisconsin-La Crosse senior right-handed pitcher Caitlyn Hughes, a 2015 SHS grad, was recently named to the 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Great Lakes Region Team, earning All-Great Lakes Region Third Team accolades. The All-NFCA Region honor is the first of her career. In May, Hughes was named to the 2019 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) First Team. She garnered her third career all-conference first team honor in 2019 after earning the award in 2016 and 2017. She was selected the 2016 WIAC Pitcher of the Year. Hughes went 16-4 this season with a 2.92 earned run average, one save and three shutouts. She led the Eagles in wins (16), starts (23), complete-games (7), strikeouts (94) and opponents' batting average (.252) while tying for the team lead in appearances (30). Hughes is second on the team in innings played (117.1). This season, Hughes led the WIAC in wins as well as starts and appearances. She finished third in the league in strikeouts, fifth in innings, sixth in opponents' batting average and 10th in earned run average. Pitching at least 5.0 innings in 10 of her 23 starts in 2019, Hughes earned shutout wins over Ripon College (Wis.) on March 2, Centre College (Ky.) on March 20 and UW-Stevens Point on April 23. She picked up a save in the Eagles' victory over UW-Platteville on April 28. In her career at UW-La Crosse, Hughes ranks second in school history in appearances (96), third in wins (43) and fourth in innings (397.0) and strikeouts (295). She finished 43-23 in her four-year career with 77 starts and a 2.89 earned run average while recording two saves. Hughes' 16 victories in 2019 are tied for second in single-season school history.
