With the MSHSL flag and pin marking the hole, top Tiger golfer Cole Jannsen chips on the green during day one of the Class AA State Tournament.
Top Stewartville golfer Cole Jannsen fired an 18-hole round of 78 on day one and a 79 on day two for a total score of 157 to place 23rd in the 83-golfer field at the MSHSL Class AA Boys State Golf Tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, held June 14-15. Younger brother Caleb Jannsen, a sophomore, shot a two-round total of 168, scoring an 84 on both days to place 62nd overall. "Cole played well both days tee-to-green, but his short game let him down slightly as he competed at state for the third time in his outstanding career," said Tiger coach Dave Honsey. "Caleb played very well at times, but just couldn't stay away from a few 'blowup' holes each day." "It is going to be very hard to replace Cole," Honsey admitted. Cole graduated from Stewartville High School on June 5, but his legacy includes the following SHS boys golf accolades: most state tournament appearances; only section champ (2021); lowest 18-hole competitive score (68); led Tigers to lowest team total (294); has earned the most HVL All-Conference honors; and he led the Tigers to another HVL title (2019) in 2022, defeating the 2022 State AA Champion PIZM in conference tournament play. Freshman Sam Udovich of St. Croix Lutheran Academy won the individual title, shooting a 142, while the team from Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa (PIZM) beat Holy Family Catholic by four strokes to win the state team title.
