Funeral for Robert Schrandt March 10 at St. John's
The funeral service for Robert C. Schrandt, 96, of rural Stewartville, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville with Rev. Lyle Fritsch officiating.
Mr. Schrandt died on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, of natural causes at the Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Marys Campus, where he had been a patient for five days.
Robert Carl Schrandt was born on Dec. 5, 1921, in Rochester, to Albert and Lena (Stauffenecker) Schrandt. He grew up on the family farm in rural Oronoco and attended country school. He enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF), serving during WWII first in Seattle and then in Hondo, Tex. as an airplane and engine mechanic.
Cpl. Robert Schrandt was married on May 26, 1945, at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota, to LaVarian J. Stewart. The couple lived in Hondo, and following Robert's discharge lived in Pine Island.
Robert began attending Rochester Evening College, where he received a Certificate of Achievement in institutional farming in 1951. In 1947, they moved to rural Stewartville, where they farmed, raised their sons and made their home all 62 years of their marriage. Robert was a lifelong farmer and was still driving combine two years ago on the farm. Levy was a farm wife and homemaker. Mrs. Schrandt died on Nov. 22, 2007.
Robert was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church serving as an usher. He was a longtime member of the Stewartville American Legion Post 164, where he helped with fundraisers, such as bingo and dinners, and marched in many parades and on many color guards for funeral services. His hobby was farming and doing mechanical work in his shop. He loved time spent with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Robert is survived by two sons, Jim Schrandt (Charlotte Weichmann) and David (Mary) Schrandt, both of Stewartville; seven grandchildren, Bradley (Cholee) Schrandt of Olympia, Wash., Melissa (Jeffrey) Wooner of Rochester, Kelly Schrandt of Rochester, Matthew Schrandt of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kasey (Julie) Schrandt of Inver Grove Heights and Gina (Austin) Schatz of Stewartville; 16 great-grandchildren, Krista, Kaiden, Ally, Mira, James, Archer, Olivia, Nolan, Reese, Cael, Aiden, Mya, Colton, Levi, Anna and August.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Levy, two sons, Steven and Larry, a granddaughter, Amy, his parents, and brother, John Schrandt.
A time of visitation for family and friends will take place one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial and a committal service with military graveside honors by the Stewartville American Legion Post 164 will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.
