The Easter Bunny, about 60 feet off the ground, accompanied by Stewartville firefighter Tom Soland above and supported by firefighters Mark Podein and Ryan Podein below, stood on a platform attached to the Stewartville Fire Department's ladder truck and opened a large garbage bag filled with about 2,500 eggs. As the colorful eggs rained down to the ground, scores of children toting Easter baskets pounced on them at close quarters, some filling their baskets to the brim.
Shortly thereafter, the Bunny opened a second bag and poured another 2,500 eggs to the earth, giving more children an opportunity to scramble for even more eggs.
The Sons of the American Legion, which sponsors the Easter Egg Hunt each year, while considering something new and exciting, settled on the egg drop concept, said Jeremiah Oeltjen, adjutant for the organization...
