Marvin "Marv" L. Sommer, 86, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021, at his home in Eudora, Kansas.
Marv was born in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Albert F. and Charlotte I. (Hadl) Sommer.
He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War as an Aviation Electronics Technician 1. After completing his four-year term in the Navy, he attended the University of Kansas and began his 30-year career as a systems engineer analyst for IBM, retiring in June of 1991.
He married the love of his life, Carolyn Carver, on June 14, 1958, at St. Peter Cathedral in Jefferson City, Missouri. She survives at home.
Marv enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with family and friends, playing softball, golfing, bowling, and watching sports. He was a member of Knights of Columbus as well as the Lions Club.
Other survivors include his children, Diane (Bob) Carlson, Steve (DaLonna) Sommer, Stan (Brenda) Sommer, Doug Sommer, Shari (Gabriel Cobos) Sommer, and Debbie (John) Hileman; brother, Joe Sommer; sister, Karen Kennedy; 17 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Marv was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Art Sommer, and sister, Mary Ledom.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Marv was celebrated Aug. 23, 2021, at at Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora with Fr. Mick Mulvany officiating. Entombment was at Resurrection Catholic Mausoleum in Lenexa, Kansas.
Memorial contributions may be made in Marv's name to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, Douglas County Visiting Nurses, or The Special Olympics, and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
