After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Stewartville's Cherish Grabau knew she would need help with tasks most of us take for granted.
In 2017, she heard about Can Do Canines, an organization that provides service dogs to assist people with mobility issues, hearing loss, diabetes and seizures.
"I was surprised they had been around so long and I'd never heard of them," she said.
Expecting the cost of a dog to be astronomical, she was floored when she learned Can Do Canines provides dogs at no cost.
"Cost is a tremendous barrier to people who could really benefit from an assistance dog, and for an organization to be able to remove that barrier just blew my mind," she said.
Zane, her 6 year-old mobility assistance yellow Labrador, went through two years of training, including time at two prisons, where inmates helped him learn the tricks of his trade. Grabau and Zane met in 2017, when Zane was 2 years old...
