In southeastern Minnesota, football is as much a part of fall as cool, crisp evenings, Halloween pumpkins and maple leaves turning red.
But with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic still a major concern, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) has decided to move football to spring 2021.
Garrett Mueller, Stewartville's head varsity football coach, was initially shocked and disappointed to hear the news.
"We have had scheduled practices throughout the summer and all of our players and coaches did a tremendous job following new restrictions in place to help keep everyone safe and healthy," he said. "All indications were that we were going to play this fall."
Mueller's surprise at the MSHSL's decision was based partly on the fact that it will be difficult for his team to practice outdoors in the spring due to the weather and the condition of the ground...
