Although no one other than city officials and the STAR's editor attended last week's truth in taxation meeting at City Hall, three representatives of the Maplebrook Townhomes Association Board and one other individual submitted written comments challenging the city of Stewartville's tax rates.
Gary Johnson, who recently challenged incumbent Jimmie-John King for the city's mayoral seat, sent an email asking why the city portion of the tax bill on his property at 302 South Main Street had increased by 10 percent.
"The county and state portions (of Johnson's overall tax bill) increased by a minimal amount," Johnson said in his email. "There were no improvements to this property, and I continue to have a vacancy for over a year's time."
