Four candidates have filed to fill two vacant seats on the Stewartville City Council.
The candidates, in alphabetical order, include Craig Anderson, Maren Schroeder, Dick Uptagrafft and Daniel J. Ware.
Anderson, who has served on the city's Economic Development Authority since January, is a lieutenant with the Rochester Police Department. Schroeder, a freelance paralegal, is a member of the city's Planning & Zoning Commission.
Uptagrafft served four terms on the City Council from Jan. 1, 1993 through Dec. 31, 2008. Ware has run for City Council every even-numbered year since 2000.
The four are vying for the two City Council seats currently occupied by Roger Hanson and Jerry Burgr, both of whom decided not to seek re-election.
Stewartville residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The candidates have responded to a series of questions from the Stewartville STAR, which will present three of their answers in this week's paper and three more in the STAR's Tuesday, Oct. 14 issue.
Here are the candidates' responses to the first three questions:
1. Please state your age, along with your education and work background:
Craig Anderson: Anderson, 43, earned a BA with a double major in sociology and criminology, as well as a minor in psychology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He is currently a lieutenant with the Rochester Police Department, assigned to the services division/staff development and training. He is in his 17th year of employment with RPD, including about eight years as a patrol officer and about 5 1/2 years as a patrol sergeant.
He is currently the president of the RPD Supervisors Association and has previously been a team leader for the Crisis Negotiation Unit and president of the Officer/Sergeants Association. After college and before becoming a police officer, he worked for a few years as a private investigator in the Twin Cities area.
