Sam Irlbeck, at the podium at left, is one among a group of Stewartville School District parents who spoke to the School Board last week, fighting for the right to make their own decisions whether their children should wear masks at school to start the 2021-22 school year. After the parents spoke, the School Board voted 4-3 to require all students in grades K-12 to wear masks in Stewartville schools. The Board’s decision means all school staff and visitors will also be required to wear face coverings in the district’s schools regardless of their vaccination status.

Parents fighting for the right to make their own decisions whether their children should wear masks at school gathered at the Central Education Center last week.
Outside the building, a trailer hitched to a sport utility vehicle held a sign to which two American flags were attached. The sign said, "No mandates. Our kids, our choice."
Inside the Central gym, the School Board hosted a meeting at which parents commented on the Board's pending decision: "Should we mandate wearing masks, or should we leave it up to the parents to decide?..."
