The 2020 postseason started for the No. 8 Stewartville wrestling team with a 39-30 loss to No. 9 St. Thomas Academy in the preliminary round of the MSHSL Section One, AA team championships in Simley on Feb. 13. With that loss, the Tigers were eliminated from the state team tourney and ended their season with an 8-16 record.
Stewie refocused and set its sights on advancing individual wrestlers to the state field by claiming first or second place in their respective weight classes at the Section 1AA individual championships at the Mayo Civic Arena on Feb. 21-22.
The young and injury-riddled Tiger lineup competed in 13 of the 14 weight classes and though none of the Stewie wrestlers advanced to this weekend's state championships, five Tigers did make the medal podium.
Stewie's five place winners included: Christian Sackett captured fourth place at 182 pounds; Jon Laures at 106 and Keegan Zelinski at 160 claimed fifth; while Riley Schwichtenberg at 145 and Parker Theobald at 220 finished sixth.
