Campbell Gunderson fired a day- one, 18-hole round of 88 and carded a day-two score of 82 for a two-day total of 170, which tied her for 12th place out of 88 of the state's best Class AA golfers. Gunderson was the only Tiger golfer competing in the girls field and one of four Stewartville golfers to qualify for the individual competition at the MSHSL, Class AA State Golf Championships at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, June 15-16.
"Campbell finished her first-ever round at state with four straight pars and showed that she belonged at this level," Tiger girls coach Todd Lechtenberg praised. "Campbell was in the right mind her entire state experience and I truly enjoyed coaching her during these last 36 holes of her high school career."
Gunderson's 12th place showcased the Stewartville effort, as the three boys were led by John Becker who fired an 18-hole round of 77 on day one, followed by his day-two score of 80 to total 152 and place 31st in the 88 boys golfer state field. Cole Jansen shot an 82/80 for 162 to claim 45th place overall and Caleb Jannsen carded an 84/85 for 169 to place 67th overall.
"John played great golf," Tiger coach Dave Honsey commented. "He struggled a bit on day two, but fought hard to turn in a solid score."
"Both Cole and Caleb played fine for most of the tournament, but were haunted each day with two bad holes that prevented them from scoring to their potential," Honsey noted. "This was a great feat for three Stewartville boys team members to make it to state in one year. Hopefully, we can build on that for next season," he concluded.
