After four years of competing at the state meet and placing second, third and fourth in the 4x400m race, seniors Hailey Lewis and Maia Peterson helped their relay team earn first place at the MSHSL Class A State Track and Field Championships in St. Michael on June 18-19. Along with freshman Taylor Klement and sophomore Haylie Strum, Lewis and Peterson raced to a season-best and gold-medal time of 4:01.18 to score 12 first-place points and help vault Stewartville to 31 points and a seventh-place finish out of the 71 teams represented in the Class A state field. Tschetter is discus champ Senior thrower Will Tschetter was the only athlete representing the Tiger boys team. Tschetter became the 2021 discus champion with a winning launch of 175-7, scoring 12 first-place points and earning the Stewartville boys 29th place out of 81 schools represented in the Class A field. Tschetter was seeded eighth going into the state's 16-thrower field and hurled the winning mark on his second throw of the finals. Girls 4x200m is 5th The 4x200m team, made up of four seniors, Jaidyn Brower, Jolie Stecher, Hailey Lewis and Maia Peterson, qualified for the state field for the second consecutive season and earned a trip to the medals podium, placing fifth with a season-best time of 1:45.89. Peterson 2nd in 400m In addition to contributing on two relay teams that placed at state, Maia Peterson collected a silver medal in the Open 400m, placing second and racing to another new school record time, clocked at 57.36. Her time was just two, one-hundredths of a second shy of collecting a gold medal in the event. Stecher 8th in shot, discus Senior Raina Stecher placed eighth in both of her throwing events. The seventh seed going into the elite 16-thrower state field, Stecher heaved the shot put 36-7.75 to make the medals podium. Seeded fourth going into the elite 16-thrower state field, Stecher launched the discus 114-5 to claim an eighth-place medal. Peterson 13th in triple jump Competing in her second individual event, Maia Peterson landed 34-5.5 to claim 13th place in the triple jump state field. Peterson competed in four events at state this season and walked away with three medals. She has been selected one of 10 candidates for Ms MN Track and Field. "It's a thrill that we finished seventh as a team," said an elated Tiger coach Dawn Miller. "And from an individual standpoint, Maia has had an incredible journey competing at the state meet four consecutive seasons." Girls earn academic gold The Stewartville girls track and field team earned the Gold Status for Academic All State with a combined GPA of 3.875. Earning Academic All State honors were Haylie Strum, Olivia Field, Emilee Otto, Ella Quam, Raina Stecher, Jolie Stecher, Taylor Klement and Jaidyn Brower.
