The Stewartville VFW Post 8980 baseball team hit the road for two games and split in recent league action, winning 8-3 at Winona on June 30 before losing 8-5 at Red Wing on July 7. The local nine's record stands at 8-6.
Stewartville 8, Winona 3
With a 13-hit attack, the Stewartville VFW put up crooked numbers in two innings, plating four runs in the second inning and three in its seventh and final at-bat while scoring a single run in the fourth frame to bury Winona. Titan Klunder led the local nine from the batter's box, hitting 2-for-3, including a double and 2RBI. Zack Schreiber went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Carter Miller went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Drew Jelenik and Reed Neubauer were both 2-for-4 at the plate.
Logan Skustad collected the win, throwing the pill from the hill. He allowed five hits and five walks, but only two runs (one earned) while recording four strikeouts in 5.1 innings worked. Neubauer took the mound in relief, allowing a walk, a hit, one earned run and tallied a "K" pitching 1.2 innings.
"Skustad kept Winona hitters off balance and under wraps for most of the contest," VFW coach Mark Schmitz praised. "He only had to be relieved due to pitch count."

Red Wing 8, Stewartville 5
Making the most of its three hits, Stewartville scored three runs in the fourth frame and two more in the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5, but Red Wing answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win. Drew Jelenik had two of team's three hits, including a double, a triple and 3RBI in his 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
Skustad got the starting nod and pitched three innings, allowing four walks, two hits and five runs (three earned) while striking out one. Bo Boettcher took the loss in relief, giving up two walks, four hits and three earned runs in three innings worked.
"We couldn't mount much offense against a couple of tough lefties Red Wing had on the mound," Schmitz explained. "The starter kept us in check and the closer was solid. We solved their middle relief guy for a few runs in the fourth and got it back to a 5-5 tie before giving up three runs in the bottom half of the sixth."
