Norvel Sheldon, longtime area resident, dies May 1

Norvel D. Sheldon, 83, a longtime Stewartville resident, died on Friday, May 1, 2020, following a short illness with cancer at the Stewartville Care Center, where he had been a resident since March of this year.
Norvel DeWayne Sheldon was born on March 16, 1937, in Madison, South Dakota to Everett and Phoebe (Baker) Sheldon. He grew up on the family farm and attended country and Madison schools. He enlisted into the U.S. Marines, serving six years, and achieved the rank of Sargent.
Norvel was married on June 9, 1962 in Pipestone to Norma J. Beck. They lived in Pipestone until moving to Stewartville in July of 1967, where they raised their family. Norvel was owner and operator of Greenway Co-op in Stewartville for a number of years. Norma was a homemaker and stay-at-home mom. Norvel was employed as the maintenance worker at Olmsted Medical Group in Rochester for many years until his retirement. He also was employed part time as a maintenance worker at Hardee's Restaurant in Stewartville for a few years. Mrs. Sheldon died on March 31, 1982.
Norvel was remarried in Stewartville to Ruth J. Wenthold and they have continued to make Stewartville their home. Norvel was a volunteer member of the Stewartville Fire Department and belonged to Stewartville American Legion Post 164. He enjoyed motorcycling and had taken long over-the-road trips with family and friends through the years. He enjoyed the outdoors, liked photographing wildlife and followed the Vikings. Norvel enjoyed visiting with friends and loved time spent with his large family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Norvel is survived by his wife, Ruth; two daughters and two sons, Kathy (Richard) Larson of Chester, Iowa, Ken Sheldon and Kelly (Mike) Yennie, both of Stewartville, and Christopher (Monica) Sheldon of Zumbrota; nine grandchildren, Blake Keller, Nikki Larson (Alex Lough), Winter Sheldon, Dakota Sheldon, Anthony Hacker, Chance Yennie, Braden Krause, Autumn Peters, Alex Sheldon, and EmmaLee Sheldon; great-grandaughter, Ava; Ruth's two daughters and two sons, Larry (Cindy) Wenthold and LaDonna Dewbery, both of Rochester, Lisa (Tom) Ress of Byron, and Joe Wenthold of Stewartville; 13 grandchildren, Larry, Brandon, Lacie (Chase), Becky, Misty, Karry, Cassie, Christina, Tanya, Troy (Kayla), Katie (Luke), Ronny (Bridget), and Alyssa (Brad); 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne "Leroy" Sheldon of Arlington, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, son, Steven Wenthold, grandson, Andrew Ress, his parents, and four sisters and four brothers.
Due to public health concerns, no service or visitation will be held at this time. A time of visitation for family and friends will take place later this summer followed by burial, with military graveside honors, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston. The date and time will be announced prior to those services. The Sheldon family asks that no flowers be sent at this time.
Arrangements are with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville. Condolences and memories of Norvel are welcome at
