Steven C. Babcock, 58, of rural Racine, died on Saturday, July 4, 2020, following a short illness with heart failure at Mayo Clinic Rochester-St. Marys Campus, where he had been a patient for the past 10 days.
Steven Charles Babcock was born on Jan. 5, 1962 in Rochester, to Leonard and Maxine (Buresh) Babcock. He moved with his family as a young boy from Wisconsin to rural Racine, where he grew up on the family farm. He attended Stewartville schools, graduating from Stewartville High School in 1980. He attended Rochester Junior College and then Mankato State, earning a degree in civil engineering. Steve was employed as a civil engineer at Yaggy Colby Associates in Rochester for over 25 years. For the past eight years, he has been employed in the engineering department at Hormel Foods in Austin. He was a member of the Racine United Methodist Church. Steve enjoyed fishing, hunting and was a member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed his hunting dogs and recently said goodbye to Jake, his 14-year-old yellow lab. He liked 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, tending to his vegetable garden and apple trees. Steve followed NASCAR, and the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. Steve enjoyed spending time with his family and loved being an uncle to his nieces and nephews and their children. He will be greatly missed!
Steve is survived by his parents, Leonard and Maxine Babcock of rural Racine; two sisters and two brothers, Denise (Loren) Skudlarek of Rochester; Dave of rural Stewartville; Ray (Donna) of Stewartville and Sandy (John) Weeks of Mesa, Ariz.; his nieces and nephews, Lindsay (Matt) Rodgers, Kristina (Dustin) Donahue, Calli (Andrew) Naylor, Bruce (Brittany) Babcock, Alex Skudlarek and Chris Skudlarek; great-nieces and nephews, Zane, Vivian, Orly, Stella, Eleanor and Croix. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
A time of visitation for family and friends will take place from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville, with safe social distancing procedures in place and the wearing of masks preferred. A private family burial and committal service will take place on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Hamilton Cemetery in rural Racine.
