Margaret Reed was born April 20, 1929 in Racine Township, Minnesota to Daniel and Florence (Brownell) Reed. She was born with a congenital eye condition and was legally blind her entire life. Margaret grew up with her older sister Virginia on the family farm in rural Racine and attended the Minnesota Braille and Sight Saving School in Faribault, where she learned to read braille and graduated in 1947. She then attended the Winona College of Business in Winona for two years. She returned to the farm to help her parents for many years, providing for their care as they aged until their deaths, and managed the farm business of renting the acreage and marketing the crop. She also raised and sold ducks and geese on their farm as a side business. In 1987, her sister Virginia returned to the farm following her retirement, after a long and accomplished career as a high school teacher and librarian. Due to failing health, the sisters moved together to Garden Cottage in Stewartville in 2005. Virginia Reed died on Jan. 27, 2009.
Margaret was a lifelong member of the Racine United Methodist Church. Margaret enjoyed reading in braille, listening to audio books and the radio, following politics, and spending time with family.
Margaret is survived by numerous cousins including special caregivers, Janice Carr and Brian Wolfgram, who helped Margaret for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Virginia Reed, and special neighbors, Sally and John Runkle.
A time of visitation for Margaret will take place one hour prior to the service on Monday morning at the Racine United Methodist Church.
